Although the desktop computer is the most used for this purpose, laptops offer us a more focused option in mobility, comfort, lightness and all the other advantages that a “lap” has.

Surely, you have heard more than one person say that there are no big differences between an ordinary laptop and a gamer, more than the price and design.

Well, certainly, these aspects are the first you may notice, but what really distinguishes them is their internal content.

And that’s where we’ll stop to dig a little deeper.

  • Gamer laptops are, at first glance, computers like any other. However, they have the particularity that they have been manufactured with the focus of offering an extraordinary gaming experience to the user. That’s why they’re named after them.
  • Buying a laptop gamer is not an easy task, let alone cheap. Therefore, you need to be clear about what you are looking for and, above all, you need to have informed yourself. The first thing that will help you get a clear idea is to set your maximum budget. This will help you limit your options and, therefore, make it easier for you to choose a model.
  • It is very important to make a comparison between gaming desktops and gamer laptops. Both devices have been manufactured with great specifications, capable of supporting the heavy and demanding use that comes with running software, games and/or emulators.
  • As the internal content is the most important thing in these computers, there are many factors and purchase criteria you should know. The most important are the technical aspects, such as the graphics card and its GPU, RAM, processors, storage capacity, type of storage, and other elements such as screen size, keyboard and materials used.

Shopping Guide: What you need to know about gamer laptops

As we mentioned, buying one of these devices is not easy, since it requires a lot of knowledge on the subject and above all on very technical aspects, very different from when you buy an ordinary laptop.

That is why, in this section, we will answer the most frequent and important questions asked by online users.

What are gamer laptops?

It is difficult to find a perfect definition that can answer what gamer laptops are, since the configurations can be similar to that of a common laptop.

However, you can notice at least 3 features at first sight, such as its robust size, its ventilation system and its keyboards.

But inside they change, and a lot.

Having said that, we can define these devices by their characteristics because they differ from the others by having great specifications.

Above all, in power and in the use of technologies, whose aim is to achieve the best performance in the execution, not only of games and emulators, but also of all types of audiovisual content in general.

This is achieved through various aspects such as: high resolution graphics, utilities that offer better connections to the network, the best GPUs (graphics cards), high-powered processors, large storage capacities and very efficient cooling systems, accompanied by materials that dissipate heat, and high quality keyboards.

Is it worth investing in a laptop gamer even if you're not going to play?

Gaming laptops are very expensive machines, besides being powerful and strong, mainly for heavy or demanding uses.

However, the fact that their focus is the gaming public, does not mean that only this group can take advantage of them.

Remember that due to their characteristics, these devices are suitable for everything.

Therefore, if you are a content creator, engineer, architect or designer, one of these devices may be very useful to you, since it executes the programs that these professionals use very well.

However, if you don’t plan to use them to play games, and you don’t need to run design, editing or content creation programs either, we don’t recommend that you buy one of these laptops.

Not only because you cannot take full advantage of their features, but mainly because of the high cost they have.

Is a laptop gamer better than a desktop gamer?

The most radical gamers will say that portable and gaming is a combination of words that makes no sense.

In this article, we won’t try to convince you that gamer laptops are better than desktops because, in the end, and in a strict sense, they will never surpass them.

This is due to their very nature, that is, the space they occupy and the portability they generate.

At the same time, these are the aspects that for some may represent a greater advantage, but of course, it will depend on what you need.

If you need portability and you move from one place to another, a laptop will be convenient.

A gamer laptop will not be able to perform tasks with the same power as a desktop one, so, naturally, it will never be able to match or exceed its performance.

However, it won’t do you any good to have a “beast” on your desk, if you need to go from one place to another.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a laptop gamer versus a desktop gamer?

The market has seen a very rapid rise in the sale of gamer laptops.

This fact has led many aspirants and veterans to wonder if they are really worth it or even a better option.

The truth is that manufacturers have been betting and reducing the differences, although naturally, they are still significant.

Here are some of them:

As you can see, the advantages of a desktop computer in terms of performance, price and upgrade ability are much greater.

It’s a logical consequence of the size of each of these.

However, for many people who have to move frequently from one place to another, portability is an aspect that for practical and necessary reasons comes before the others.

In one way or another, the fact of buying a gaming laptop does not mean that you are buying an extremely inferior device, since as we mentioned before, these computers have been manufactured to work in the most demanding conditions.

Just take into account the limitations and, above all, the price.

What are some of the features that make a laptop gamer different from traditional ones?

Although the differences between these two teams are more than obvious, it is also worth making a distinction between the two.

At the beginning, we could say that a laptop gamer is a much higher version of an ordinary laptop.

While traditional laptops support moderate use, gamers are made for demanding use.

  1. Gamer laptops have very sophisticated designs. Just by looking at them, you know that this is a special device.
  2. Gamer laptops have specially designed cooling systems and high speed fans. They achieve efficient operation and prevent overheating due to the demanding tasks they are subjected to.
  3. They have dedicated high-end graphics cards, while common laptops have integrated graphics cards.
  4. The gamer laptops are integrated with special keyboards that have LED lighting in some cases, configurable, and high quality displays. Some even have mechanical keyboards.
  5. High power consumption in terms of processors, as they are more powerful and contain a higher speed than common computer processors.
  6. Gamer laptops also have a larger storage RAM capacity and a VRAM (dedicated only to videos).
  7. Due to the high power consumption required by the processors, the battery of gaming laptops lasts less than the battery of a traditional laptop. In some cases, it is necessary to have one or even 2 external batteries.

We can keep on naming many more aspects, but we can definitely say that a gaming laptop is better in all aspects than a normal one, either in size, capacity, speed and power.

The only aspect it lags behind is the battery life, for obvious reasons, due to the level of demands it is subjected to.

Purchase criteria

There are many details, aspects, features and benefits that you should know about the gamer laptops, remember that you are not investing a few dollars.

The components with which a laptop is manufactured will define the level of performance it will have under the most demanding conditions.

Keep in mind the following aspects:

  • GPU and graphics card.
  • Processor.
  • RAM.
  • Storage capacity and type.
  • Screen.
  • Frame rate.
  • Panel type and refresh rate.
  • Resolution.
  • Keyboard and trackpad.
  • Portability.

GPU and graphics card

The GPU (graphics processing unit) refers to the very core that is inside the graphics card.

It is therefore important not to confuse or use both terms interchangeably, as this is not correct.

The GPU is usually located on plug-in cards, on a chipset on the motherboard, or on the CPU chip itself.

This component is perhaps the most important within a gamer computer, since the main function of this unit is to perform all the mathematical calculations necessary to reproduce images on the screen.

The more sophisticated they are, the higher the resolution, speed and fluidity in game, video or movie images.

The most used graphic cards are Nvidia.

So we recommend that you have at least one Nvidia GEFORCE from the GTX 10 series to play with.

Recently, they have launched their new GTX 16 series, which is by logic more powerful.

They also have the GTX 20 series, being this the most powerful in the market, with a high price.

Processor

Processors for gamer laptops are practically named after the manufacturer Intel.

This doesn’t mean that another manufacturer like AMD is bad, but they very rarely have these processors (the same happens with graphics cards).

The opposite is true for desktop computers that do have very good AMD components.

Having said that, we will talk about Intel and its high-end Core processors, currently of the ninth generation.

We recommend that the minimum is at least seventh or eighth generation and, ideally, start with an Intel Core i5 processor.

If you choose the latest generation, the i5-9400F and the i5-9600K 6-core and 6-wire respectively will suit you quite well.

Of course if you have a bigger budget, an 8-core 8-wire Intel Core i7-9700K or a 6-core 12-wire i7-9750H will work great for you.

The latest in power is the 8-core 16-wire Intel Core i9-9900K.

One example is the new Alienware Area 51, officially launched in February 2019.

RAM

We already know that RAM is the main memory of a computer, where all data and programs are stored.

Therefore, as far as RAM is concerned, there is not much to be lost, since according to the number of demanding tasks the computer will be submitted to, it will have to have a decent amount or more.

We do not recommend a laptop with less than 8GB of RAM and at least 2GB of VRAM, since with this capacity, your computer will have the minimum to play smoothly, but we do not assure you that you will be able to demand the execution of more simultaneous tasks or multithreading.

Remember that playing is one of the most demanding tasks that a computer performs.

Therefore, having 16GB or 32GB of RAM would be ideal, since with this capacity your laptop will be provided with enough power to run several threads at once.

However, don’t worry if you only have 8GB, since RAM is one of the easiest things to expand and it doesn’t generate such a high cost.

Storage capacity and type

On this criterion, it will always be better to have more and, currently, the vast majority of models are marketed with 1,000 GB (1 TB) of storage.

This amount would be appropriate, but you can also find models with 256 GB or 512 GB.

In this case, the minimum would be 512 GB, so you can increase the memory, but don’t settle for less than that.

In terms of storage type, it’s best to have a combination of at least 256 GB SSD and at least 7,200rpm HDD storage.

The SSD is used for boot-up, making it faster, while the HDD is used for storage.

The more accessible models only have HDDs.

Although, as you know, it can be upgraded on some models.

Display

The screen is another component that directly affects the quality with which we can play.

Ideal sizes for gaming or content editing and creation are laptops with 15.6 and 17.3 screens.

Of course, you can find smaller sizes, but do you really want to limit your gaming experience?

That’s why we recommend a minimum size of 15.6 and a maximum size of 17.3.

There are models with a size of 18.3, but we think it’s too big.

Remember that the size of the screen should be proportional to the size of the computer.

It will be up to you, if you want to sacrifice a little size for lightness.

We’ll keep 17.3, no doubt.

Frame rate

The frequency of the image is measured in hertz (Hz), which we could say represents the cycles per second of the image.

To understand how hertz works, one must know the frames per second (fps).

As the image is intimately linked to the screen, we can find, nowadays, screens with frequencies of 60 Hz, 120 Hz and 144 Hz in their great majority.

However, there are already manufacturers that have launched laptops with screens that have a frequency of 240 Hz, of course, much more expensive than the others.

Our recommendation is that you buy a laptop with a minimum of 120 Hz or 144 Hz, if you have a little more budget.

And, if money is not a limit for you, then buy one with 240 Hz, although the two previous frequencies work very well too.

The 60 Hz frequency is not that bad, but it is a difference.

Panel type and refresh rate

Another question that is directly related to the issue of the screen and that many users face when choosing their laptop.

We can say, basically, that there are 4 types of panels: TN, IPS, VA and PLS panels.

We will only focus on the first two, since they are the most used.

Again, a lot will depend on the intended use of these devices.

However, TN panels are the least expensive to manufacture and that makes them the most popular.

They are ideal for those who want to use games exclusively because they have very short refresh rates, up to 1 millisecond (ms).

On the other hand, IPS panels are the most recommended when you want to edit images and multimedia content, since they reflect colors more faithfully.

They are also much more expensive than TN and refresh rates are around 4 and 5 milliseconds (ms), with the more expensive and sophisticated models having up to 3 ms.

Resolution

This is another question that many users ask themselves which resolution suits them best, 1080P or 4K?

Some even go for the latest image innovation, 4K, because they think it’s the best.

If you need a laptop just for gaming, a screen with 1080p resolution will do, and you can buy one with 120Hz, 144Hz, or even 240Hz.

The 4K is currently only 60 Hz, and a 1,080 P will consume less battery power.

The 4K is recommended for editing and content creation, because you will have more details on screen.

Keyboard and trackpad

The keyboard is one of the most important components of the gamer laptops, remember that it works as a control panel and each key will have a function.

In the vast majority of gamer laptops, we find membrane keyboards, which will not support being continuously and strongly pressed for a long time.

The best option are mechanical keyboards, like the ones you would have with a desktop gamer computer.

Unfortunately, there are not many models available yet that include this type of keyboard.

However, some manufacturers, especially in their more sophisticated models, have started to use them.

As for the trackpad, no further research is required to know that it is not the most comfortable thing to work with, let alone play with.

Therefore, our recommendation is that you get a gamer mouse, as it will be more comfortable and suitable for you.

Portability

This criterion is related to the weight of the laptop and therefore depends on how comfortable you are with one weight or another.

As all aspects and components are related to each other, you must take into account that the size and weight will directly influence the laptop’s capacity.

The more weight and size, the more capacity, and the lighter and more compact, the less capacity.

Gaming laptops will always be much heavier and stronger than a traditional laptop, being able to weigh a bit more than 4 kg.

We believe that the medium is always a good parameter and with a 2 to 3 kg laptop, you will have a good equipment, besides not being so uncomfortable to carry with you.

Summary

The gamer world is not easy to master, it’s not as easy as going to a store to look at normal laptops and being able to make a decision right there and go out with one of these devices.

These devices require a lot of information and research, knowing the components that make them up and the capabilities they offer.

It is worth mentioning again that these do not surpass, in terms of capacity and performance, a desktop computer.

Much will depend on the intended use you plan to give them, since based on this, some components and features will suit you more one way than another.

Our wish is that you have been able to learn more about these great computers, and that you have been able to solve each one of your questions.

Finally, we invite you to share your opinions or suggestions on this subject, as this will help us to always give you the best.
